VG Insights Steam Analytics page is the new player on the street. I’ve long tried to find a good solution to doing market research for PC games. Steam Spy and SteamDB give a lot of good data, but any research would take days of data gathering and analysis.

This is a short summary of VG Insight’s capabilities and the importance of video game market research using Steam data.

Steam Analytics features

  • Average prices
    • How much do games similar to mine cost?
    • Have Steam games become more expensive?
    • Could I charge more for a survival or a classic RPG game?
  • Average ratings
    • Which genres are better received by the players?
    • How did the launch of this new AAA game do?
    • How does my game compare to other similar games in terms of player feedback?
  • Units and revenue sales
    • How much can I expect to earn for my game?
    • What should I say in my funding pitch when they ask for proof that my game can be profitable?
    • How much do indie games earn?
  • Game releases
    • When do other games similar to mine typically launch?
    • When should I launch my game?
    • Are there any games that are in the same release window?
    • When do Steam games mostly get released?

Individual games steam stats

VG Insights has also recently released individual games pages. This allows developers and enthusiasts to do high level analysis on Steam Analytics and then dig into higher level of detail by looking at individual games.

Why video game market research matters?

Data driven decision making is a standard in most other industries. Even the film industry has moved strongly to that direction, despite having similar creative roots to gaming. It doesn’t mean that films have moved further from creativity

Data doesn’t kill creativity or intuition. It’s supporting them.

Do you have several good game ideas, but don’t know which one to pursue? Do some research.

Do you want to get funding so you could spend your full time on your passion of making games? Use data in your pitch.

Do you not understand why your game hasn’t got the number of players you thought it would? You can use data to answer that question.
